Favorite Sugar Cookies Recipe

This is my shortcut for baking the best sugar cookies you ever tasted. This recipe originally came to me from a friend of my mother’s who cut it out of a newspaper more than 50 years ago. Older versions of Betty Crocker’s cookbook also had this recipe, but I don’t think the newer versions have it.

Ingredients
1 1/2 C. powdered sugar
1 C. butter (no substitutes), softened
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. almond extract
2 1/2 C. all-purpose flour (not self-rising)
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
Desired food coloring
Directions
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix powdered sugar, butter, egg, vanilla and almond extract. Mix in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Add food coloring if desired. Place cookie dough into cookie press (this is my shortcut) and press cookies onto lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake until edges are light brown, 7-8 minutes.
Dough may also be refrigerated for two hours, then rolled out and cut into shapes, and decorated as desired. Baking is the same.
